Graphitization carbon steel
WebGraphitisation is a microstructural change which can occur in carbon or low alloy steels that are exposed to elevated temperatures, between approximately 425°C and 600°C, for long periods of time. It is most often encountered in boiler tubes and related equipment that have experienced service temperatures in this range for several thousand hours. WebGraphitization is a form of material degradation occurring when the microstructure of some carbon and low alloy steels breaks down after long exposure to elevated temperatures (825 - 1300 F), causing the metal to weaken and be susceptible to cracking failures.

Samples of carbon steel tubes were removed from the radiant section of a fired heater after 40 years operation at 950oF to 1000oF (510oC to 538oC) tube metal temperature. The tubes exhibited significant microstructural degradation in the form of advanced pearlite decomposition and graphitization (graphite nodules). However, no …

WebFor plain- carbon (SA178, SA192, SA210) and carbon-1/2 molybdenum (SA209) steels, the iron carbide itself is unstable and will transform to graphite and ferrite. Thus, a further step in the microstructural changes is the formation of graphite particles within the steel, a process known as "graphitization." WebThe pipe had been age-related graphitization of carbon and low alloy steel in ele- in service for 5-1/2 years at a temperature of 935 ⬚F (502 ⬚C) vated-temperature fossil plant (or other) service is an example and was found to have ruptured along a “plane of graphite” of secondary graphitization.
WebIn this paper, she defined graphitizing carbons as those that can transform into crystalline graphite by being heated to 3000°C, while non-graphitizing carbons don't transform into graphite at any temperature. Precursors that produce graphitizing carbon include polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and petroleum coke.
