WebChoanal Atresia. Choanal atresia is a congenital (present at birth) condition in which the back of the nasal passage (called the “choana”) is blocked, usually by abnormal bony or soft tissue that does not develop properly during fetal development. Normally the nasal passage forms in early development through a thick wall of soft tissue. WebChoanal atresia usually presents in neonates. It is one of the commonest causes of nasal obstruction in neonates and infants. It is more commoner in females and unilateral. Unilateral choanal atresia present late and can be asymptomatic or present with rhinorrhea while bilateral atresias can present with neonatal respiratory distress.
